What time should we leave?

Gates and entry processing take longer than usual on Grand Final Day, and the MCG itself advises arriving early and allowing plenty of time for entry 1. Pre-game entertainment is expected to start in the hour or so before the first bounce, with Kylie Minogue headlining 1.

A workable plan for a 2.30pm bounce:

• Want the full pre-game? Be dropped off by 12.15pm.
• Want a calm entry and a seat before the anthem? Be dropped off by 1.00pm.
• Cutting it fine? 1.30pm is the latest we would recommend, and it assumes nothing goes wrong on the approach.

Add thirty minutes to all of the above if you are coming from beyond the inner suburbs, and more if you are collecting several passengers on the way.

Where can a car actually stop near the MCG?

The MCG sits inside Yarra Park, and the streets and parkland around it are managed for pedestrian flow on a full house. Vehicle access close to the gates is restricted while crowds move. In practice, a chauffeur cannot deliver you to a gate — and would not want to, because that is exactly where everything stops.

What works is an agreed drop-off on the perimeter, chosen for the gate you actually hold tickets for, with a short walk in. Jolimont, Richmond and the Wellington Parade side each behave differently on the day, so the point is selected for your entry, not for the venue in general.

How do we get home afterwards?

This is the half of the day people plan last and regret first. Roughly a hundred thousand people leave at once, most of them on foot towards the same few stations and streets.

Two things make the difference.

A pickup point that is not the drop-off point.
