Cox Plate 2026 Moves to Flemington: Getting There and Getting Home

The 2026 Ladbrokes Cox Plate will be run at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday 24 October 2026, not at Moonee Valley. It is the first time in the race's history it has been held anywhere else. If you have been to a Cox Plate before, almost everything you know about arriving and leaving needs to be re-planned, because Flemington is a different size, a different shape and a different traffic problem.

Why has the Cox Plate moved to Flemington?

Racing Victoria, in consultation with the Moonee Valley Racing Club, awarded hosting rights for the 2026 Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate to the Victoria Racing Club at Flemington, because The Valley Racecourse is closed for at least 21 months from November 2025 for a major redevelopment 1. The VRC has confirmed Saturday 24 October 2026 for the meeting, with the first race at 12.25pm and the last at 5.50pm 2.

The card also carries the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup over 2500m, whose winner receives a golden ticket into the 2026 Lexus Melbourne Cup — the last automatic entry available 2.

What does the venue change actually mean for travel?

Three practical things change.

The geography changes. Moonee Valley is a tight, contained course in a residential grid. Flemington is a large course inside a river flat, with its own approach roads through Ascot Vale and Flemington and a dedicated racecourse railway station. The distances you walk on-course are longer, and the distance between where a vehicle can legally stop and where you actually want to be is longer too.

The crowd profile changes. A Cox Plate at Flemington, one week before Derby Day, is expected to draw a bumper crowd, and both MVRC and VRC members have access 1. Assume a fuller course than a normal Group 1 Saturday.

The road management changes. Flemington's feature-day arrangements are set per meeting: some entry points open, others close, and pedestrian flows are managed. This is exactly why we confirm the arrangements for the specific date rather than repeating what worked last spring.

When should we arrive?

Work backwards from the first race you care about, not from the gates opening.

If you want to be on course before the first at 12.25pm, aim to be dropped off between 11.00am and 11.30am. That gives you time to clear the entry queue, find your enclosure or marquee, and still be standing somewhere sensible for the opener. If your day starts with lunch or hospitality, the booking time is set by the hospitality sitting, not the race card — tell us the sitting time and we will work back from it.

If you are only coming for the feature, remember the Cox Plate itself sits late in the programme. Arriving an hour before it is enough for the racing but not enough for the queue, the walk and the photographs.

Where should the car drop us off — and pick us up?

These should be two different answers, and both belong in writing before the day.

Drop-off works best on the approach side, as early in the arrival window as possible, before the flow thickens. Pickup works best away from the main pedestrian release. On a feature day at Flemington, tens of thousands of people leave within a narrow window, much of it towards the racecourse station. A vehicle waiting inside that flow is a stationary vehicle.

What about dresses, heels and a long afternoon?

This is not a small consideration. Spring racing dress is built for photographs and marquees, not for a fifteen-minute walk across a car park on uneven ground in October heat or October rain. Melbourne will happily give you both in the same afternoon.

Practical points that come up every year:

• Nominate the shortest legal walk, and accept a slightly longer drive to get it.
• Carry flat shoes for the walk in and out. Nobody has ever regretted this.
• If someone in the party has limited mobility, tell us when booking — the vehicle, the drop-off choice and the timing all change.
• Hats and hair do not survive being rushed. Build ten minutes of slack into the arrival.

How do we plan the trip home?

Decide the structure of the return before you decide the time.

A nominated return time suits a group that is leaving after a specific race or at the end of hospitality. It is the better value option when the finish is genuinely known.

As-directed hire keeps the vehicle and chauffeur with you for the day. It suits a long afternoon where lunch runs over, someone wants to stay for the last, or the party splits and re-forms. You are not paying twice for a return leg you cannot schedule, and nobody is standing on the Epsom Road side at 6.30pm hoping a car appears.

For groups of more than four, book the return before you book anything else. Larger vehicles are the first to be committed across Melbourne during the carnival fortnight.

How far ahead should we book?

Cox Plate Day sits immediately before the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington, which runs from 31 October to 7 November 2026 1. That means two consecutive weekends of large Flemington crowds with a public-holiday Tuesday in between.
