Be honest about the length of the day
Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles and back is a long day: commonly eleven to thirteen hours door to door once stops are included. That is not a reason to avoid it — it is one of the great coastal drives — but it is a reason to plan it properly and to start early.
A 7:00 departure is normal. A 9:00 departure means arriving at the Apostles in the middle of the day with the coach tours, and returning in the dark.
What actually fits in one day
Adding Gibson Steps, London Bridge and the Grotto is possible but pushes the return past 21:00. Choose two of the three rather than all of them.

The return-route decision
From the Twelve Apostles you can retrace the coast or return inland via Colac and the Princes Highway. The inland route is roughly an hour to ninety minutes faster and considerably less tiring at the end of a long day; the coastal return gives you the sea on the other side in evening light.
Most guests take the inland return. Decide before you leave the Apostles, not at the junction.
When one day is the wrong plan
- Travelling with young children — the driving hours dominate the day.
- Guests arriving from a long-haul flight within the previous 24 hours.
- Wanting to see the Apostles at sunrise or sunset, which requires an overnight in Port Campbell.
- Adding the Grampians or Warrnambool, which is a two-day itinerary regardless of how it looks on a map.
Practical notes
- Weather changes fast and the coast is exposed; bring layers even in summer.
- Sections of the road are winding — guests prone to motion sickness should sit forward.
- Mobile coverage drops out through the Otways; agree meeting points at each stop.
- Food options between Apollo Bay and Port Campbell are limited; plan lunch rather than improvising it.
