Flying in from interstate
With Fremantle and Brisbane Lions contesting the Grand Final, a large share of the crowd will arrive by air. Supporters travelling from Perth and Brisbane are joined by people flying in from Sydney, Adelaide, Canberra, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and Hobart, along with families driving up from regional Victoria.
Western Australian supporters should note the time difference: first bounce is 2:30pm AEST at the MCG, which is 12:30pm AWST back home. If you are flying east on the morning of the match, the arrival and the transfer into the city both need to sit comfortably inside that window.
We collect from Melbourne Airport and coordinate the hotel and MCG legs of the trip, so one booking covers the arrival, match day and the return to the airport.
Grand Final Melbourne travel guide
Planning ahead matters more on Grand Final weekend than on an ordinary Melbourne Saturday. Accommodation in the CBD and Southbank is in demand, and a transfer arranged a few weeks out is simply easier to coordinate than one arranged the day before.
Most interstate visitors arrive through Melbourne Airport. Booking a private arrival transfer means the trip into the city is planned around your flight rather than the queue you find when you land. The MCG sits in Yarra Park, immediately east of the CBD and close to the Jolimont and Richmond ends of the city. It is a short journey from most central hotels, but allow extra travel time on the day: traffic and pedestrian volumes around the precinct build well before the first bounce.
After the match, congestion around the venue takes a while to clear.
