How to Get to the MCG for the AFL Grand Final: Private Transfer Guide

The MCG is a walk-in venue in a parkland setting, which makes it lovely to arrive at and genuinely awkward to leave. On an ordinary fixture that hardly matters. On Grand Final day, when the ground is full and the surrounding streets are managed for people rather than cars, the difference between a smooth day and a frustrating one is almost entirely about planning.

Where the MCG actually is

The ground sits in Yarra Park, immediately east of the Melbourne CBD, between the city and Richmond. That location is why the venue feels close to everything: from most central hotels the distance is short. It is also why the final approach is on foot. Vehicles cannot deliver you to a gate through a crowd, and no chauffeur would want to try — that is precisely where movement stops.

From CBD hotels

If you are staying in the central city, the run to the ground is brief in normal conditions and longer than you'd expect on Grand Final day. The variable is not distance, it's the volume of people and vehicles converging on the same few streets.

For locals, the calculation is usually about the return rather than the trip in. Driving yourself means one person in the group stays sober and, more importantly, means you will be leaving the area at exactly the same time as tens of thousands of other people who are also trying to reach their car.

There is no single right answer here, and it is worth being straight about the trade-offs.

Public transport moves the largest number of people and is the default for a big crowd at the MCG. Event-day arrangements, services and timetables are published by Public Transport Victoria — check there rather than relying on hearsay.

Walking from the central city is genuinely viable for many people and is often the fastest way to leave afterwards, at least for the first stretch.

Driving yourself puts you in charge until the match ends, at which point you are in a queue with everyone else, and you still need somewhere to leave the car.

Arranging the return — the part that matters most

If you take one thing from this guide: book the return at the same time as the trip in.

After the final siren, a full house leaves at once. Traffic around the precinct is heavy, foot traffic heavier, and mobile coverage in a dense crowd is unreliable. Trying to arrange a car in that environment is the worst possible time to start.

When the return is pre-booked, three things are already settled: the collection point, the collection time, and who is looking for whom. We deliberately set the pickup clear of the heaviest pedestrian movement, which usually means a slightly longer walk in exchange for a much shorter wait. Allow time for crowds, both ways

Two buffers to build in. On the way in, add time for the approach and for entry processing; gates take longer when a ground is filling completely. On the way out, accept that the first twenty minutes belong to the crowd, not to you. Neither buffer is wasted — it is the difference between a relaxed day and a stressful one.
